Miami often brings to mind the vibrant stretch of Miami Beach, with its iconic art deco buildings, lively coastlines, and a unique blend of culture and style. My visit in October 2023, while on tour with The 1975, gave me just a brief window to experience this famous city. Though my time in Miami itself was limited, Miami Beach offered a vivid snapshot of what makes this place so special. Here’s a personal account of that short but unforgettable escape.

The Miami Beach Vibe
Miami Beach is exactly what most people picture when they hear “Miami.” The clean, pastel-colored art deco buildings create a look that feels almost like a theme park, but the atmosphere is far from artificial. People of all genders and backgrounds stroll along the coast, some even rollerskating, which was a surprising and delightful sight. The beach itself is stunning, with soft white sand and clear blue water stretching as far as the eye can see.
The social scene is lively. Bars line the coast, with outdoor seating where people gather to enjoy drinks and conversation under the warm sun or the glow of neon lights after dark. I found a bar that served an Old Fashioned cocktail that stood out as one of the best I’ve ever had—smooth, perfectly balanced, and unexpected in a place known more for fruity drinks.
The car culture here is another highlight. Fancy cars cruise the streets, some classic beauties and others loud, customized rides that grab attention. One memorable moment was spotting a pink dog casually walking nearby, adding to the quirky charm of the area.
A Brief but Memorable Break
Touring with a band like The 1975 means a packed schedule, but Miami gave us a rare 2-3 day break. The band was playing a small gig elsewhere, so the touring crew had some downtime. I used this time to soak in the coastal stretch of Miami Beach, appreciating the contrast between the busy tour life and this mini holiday.
The clean lines of the art deco buildings, the ocean breeze, and the vibrant street life made it easy to forget the hectic pace of the tour. It felt like a small escape, a chance to recharge and enjoy something beautiful and different.
Getting Inked in Miami
One of the most personal highlights of this trip was finally getting my first tattoo. For years, I had wanted one but never settled on a design or found the right moment. Along with four others from the crew, I visited Love Hate Studio, formerly known as Miami Ink from the TV show.

We asked if we could book appointments, and luckily, they had availability the next day. I spent the evening working on my scrapbook ideas and settled on a design style that felt right. The experience was exciting and meaningful, and I’m thrilled with the result. It felt like a perfect way to mark this unique moment in Miami.
The Energy of Miami Beach
Miami Beach is a place where the energy is palpable. Cruise ships constantly come and go from the harbor, adding to the sense of movement and excitement. The mix of tourists, locals, and artists creates a dynamic environment that’s both relaxing and stimulating.
The city’s style, from the architecture to the cars to the people, reflects a confident, playful spirit. It’s a place where you can enjoy simple pleasures like a walk on the beach or a well-crafted cocktail, but also experience unexpected moments that stay with you.

Final Thoughts on Miami Beach
My time in Miami was short but left a lasting impression. Miami Beach lived up to every expectation I had, offering a blend of beauty, culture, and fun that felt like a mini holiday in the middle of a busy tour. The art deco buildings, the beach, the people, and even the car culture all combined to create a unique experience.
