Memphis has a way of pulling you in with its rich musical history and vibrant street life. I visited for the first time in 2024 while touring with Hozier on his world tour. Our hotel was right behind Beale Street, placing me in the heart of the city’s tourist buzz. I’ve always loved Nashville for its music scene, but Memphis felt different—deeper, rawer, and filled with stories of legendary artists who shaped rock and roll. This post shares my personal experience walking through Memphis, soaking in its energy, and visiting two iconic places: Sun Studio and Graceland.

Walking Beale Street: The Heartbeat of Memphis
Beale Street is where Memphis comes alive, especially at night. During the day, tourists flood the street, exploring shops, restaurants, and music venues. I didn’t venture far beyond Beale Street due to other plans, but the street itself offers a full experience. The night I stayed, a bike meet was happening nearby. I spent time admiring the motorcycles as I walked up and down the street. The bars were packed, and live bands played in most venues, creating an atmosphere similar to Nashville’s but with a smaller, more intimate feel.
The energy on Beale Street is electric but laid-back. It’s a place where music lovers gather, and the sounds of blues, rock, and soul spill out onto the sidewalks. Walking here, you feel connected to the roots of American music.
Stepping Back in Time at Sun Studio

One of the highlights of my Memphis visit was Sun Studio. Opened in 1950, this studio is famous for launching the careers of some of the biggest names in rock and roll. Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Roy Orbison all recorded their early hits here. For me, Sun Studio was more than just a tourist stop—it was a personal journey.
My dad was a huge Johnny Cash fan, and growing up, his music was a big part of the soundtrack in our home. Standing in the same room where Johnny Cash recorded some of his most famous tracks brought back memories of my dad and made the experience deeply meaningful. The studio itself has been preserved with care, and the guided tour shares stories and plays original recordings that make you feel like you’re stepping into music history.
A highlight of the tour is when they present the actual microphone used to record some of those iconic songs we all recognize. It's quite thrilling to stand and hold the exact same microphone that was used years ago to record the songs we all cherish.

Visiting Sun Studio gave me a new appreciation for the roots of rock and roll and the artists who changed music forever. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in the story behind the sound.

The Iconic Graceland Experience
No visit to Memphis would be complete without seeing Graceland, Elvis Presley’s famous home. I hadn’t planned on it initially, but the tour promoters arranged a visit for anyone interested, and I’m glad they did. Walking through Graceland offers a glimpse into the life of the King of Rock and Roll beyond the stage.
The guided tour provides insight into his career, his family life, and his impact on music and culture. It’s a place that feels both grand and personal, showing the man behind the legend. The new Museum just across from the mansion is filled with memorabilia, from Elvis’s gold records to his unique costumes and personal items.
I have to admit, I was never a big fan of Elvis. He was before my time, and I didn't truly appreciate how much he accomplished in such a short period. It's inspiring to see and read about his rapid rise to fame, and it's eye-opening, and somewhat personal, to understand how the industry played a significant role in his downfall and ultimately his death. I left Graceland feeling much more informed about someone I now have a lot more respect for. The mansion was modest but not overly large; it didn't scream extravagance like some modern celebrities' homes. Elvis bought Graceland primarily to house his family, and to my knowledge, the family still owns the property, with the upstairs remaining off-limits to anyone outside the family.
Graceland also has a peaceful garden and meditation area where Elvis is buried, which adds a reflective moment to the visit. For fans and curious travelers alike, Graceland is a powerful reminder of how one person’s passion can leave a lasting mark on the world.

Final Thoughts on Memphis
Memphis surprised me with its authentic vibe and deep musical roots. Even though I didn’t explore beyond Beale Street much, the energy of the city and the history I experienced at Sun Studio and Graceland made a lasting impression. It’s a place where music history lives and breathes, and walking its streets feels like stepping into a story that shaped American culture.
