When I found myself with a day off in San Diego during a tour with The 1975, I had no idea what awaited me. I wasn’t familiar with the city, and I didn’t have a plan. What started as a casual stroll quickly turned into an unforgettable day filled with history, great food, and a surprising connection to one of my favorite films from the 80s: Top Gun. This is the story of how I stumbled upon a piece of movie magic at Kansas City BBQ and why San Diego deserves a spot on your travel list.

Exploring San Diego’s Harbor and the USS Midway

My first stop was the harbor area, drawn by the iconic USS Midway, an aircraft carrier turned museum. It’s a massive ship with so much to explore that the staff advised me not to board unless I had several hours to spare. Since my day was limited, I decided to save the tour for another visit. Still, just walking around the harbor gave me a sense of San Diego’s rich naval history and its connection to the sea.

The harbor area itself is lively and scenic, perfect for a relaxed walk. You can see boats, seagulls, and the skyline blending with the ocean breeze. If you have more time, the USS Midway offers an immersive experience with aircraft displays, flight simulators, and stories from veterans. It’s a must-see for history buffs and anyone curious about naval life.

Finding Kansas City BBQ and the Top Gun Connection

After soaking in the harbor atmosphere, I wanted to find a place to eat without straying too far or overexerting myself. That’s when I spotted Kansas City BBQ, a small, quiet bar with a casual vibe. It was early afternoon, and the place was nearly empty. I took a seat at the end of the bar and ordered a beer, ready to relax.

The walls were decorated with navy pilot memorabilia, photos, and patches. At first, I thought it was just a tribute to the local naval community. Then I noticed other customers snapping pictures—not of me, but of the bar itself. That’s when it hit me: this was the very bar featured in Top Gun.

Sitting Where Tom Cruise Sat

As an 80s kid, Top Gun was a huge part of my childhood, and the recent sequel brought it back into the spotlight. Sitting in that bar, I realized I was in the exact spot where Tom Cruise’s character, Maverick, sat during the film’s iconic final scene. The bar was also the setting for the famous piano scene where “Great Balls of Fire” was played although the piano was moved for the filming to around the corner. The staff in the bar will openly explain and chat about it!

The atmosphere was electric. People from all over the world came in, sharing stories about the film and their visits. I ended up staying for hours, chatting with fellow fans and soaking in the nostalgia. It felt like stepping into a living movie set, a rare and unexpected travel experience.

Why San Diego Surprised Me

San Diego isn’t always the first city that comes to mind when you think of travel adventures. But this day showed me how much the city has to offer beyond the usual tourist spots. From historic naval landmarks to hidden gems like Kansas City BBQ, there’s a lot to discover if you’re open to exploring.

The city’s laid-back vibe, combined with its rich history and pop culture connections, makes it a unique destination. Whether you’re a history lover, a foodie, or a movie fan, San Diego has something that can surprise you.

Tips for Visiting San Diego and Kansas City BBQ

  • Plan your time at the USS Midway: If you want to explore the aircraft carrier, set aside at least 3-4 hours. It’s a large museum with plenty to see.

  • Visit Kansas City BBQ during off-peak hours: The bar can get busy, especially with tourists. Early afternoon visits offer a more relaxed experience.

  • Talk to locals and fellow visitors: The stories and shared memories add a special layer to your visit.

Embracing the Unexpected in Travel

This day in San Diego reminded me why I love traveling without a strict itinerary. Sometimes the best experiences come from wandering and being open to surprises. Finding a piece of Top Gun history in a quiet BBQ bar was not something I planned, but it became the highlight of my trip.

If you’re heading to San Diego, don’t just stick to the usual tourist checklist. Explore, ask questions, and be ready to discover something unexpected. You might find your own memorable adventure waiting around the corner.

Whether you’re a fan of naval history, classic films, or just good food in a unique setting, San Diego offers a blend of all these elements. Kansas City BBQ is a perfect example of how a simple place can hold a special story and create lasting memories.

Next time you’re in San Diego, take a moment to visit the harbor, enjoy the local flavors, and maybe, just maybe, sit where Maverick once sat.
