Unforgettable Motorbike Adventure on Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park

Riding a motorbike through the Rocky Mountains is an experience that stays with you long after the engine cools. During my recent trip to Denver, Colorado, I decided to rent a motorbike and explore one of the most iconic routes in the USA: Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. The combination of winding roads, breathtaking views, and the thrill of motorbiking made it one of the best rides of my life. Here’s a detailed account of that unforgettable journey.
Preparing for the Ride
With three days off, I decided to explore the local motorbike rental options. After a quick internet search, I discovered that Eagle Riders had a depot in Denver, conveniently close to where I was staying. Given that this was a last-minute booking, my choices for bikes were understandably limited. I ended up choosing a Yamaha Bolt, a model I'm not very familiar with, especially since I usually ride Super Sports bikes, which are quite different from my usual preference. Nonetheless, a bike is a bike, so I booked it for pick-up the very next day! I can't thank Eagle Riders Denver enough, as I managed to arrange this late in the afternoon for an early morning pick-up the following day.
I wasn't sure what to anticipate regarding the weather, and since I was traveling for work, I didn't have any biking gear with me. It was mid-summer, so I was confident it wouldn't be too harsh, but I did think to pack some warmer clothes, knowing it could get colder as I ascended into the mountains. Although it was just a day ride, I brought a small backpack with some warmer clothing.
When I rented the bike, I also arranged to rent a riding jacket and a full-face helmet. Additionally, I purchased some leather bike gloves from the shop located at the rental place. Although they offer gear for sale, I already have my own gear at home and couldn't bring anything back with me after the trip except for the gloves I bought. Therefore, renting was an ideal solution, and the gear is in excellent, clean condition.
I also checked the park’s website for Trail Ridge Road conditions. The road is typically open from late May to mid-October, depending on snow. Since it reaches elevations over 12,000 feet, it’s important to be prepared for cooler temperatures and thinner air.
The Route and Road Conditions
Trail Ridge Road stretches about 48 miles through Rocky Mountain National Park, connecting Estes Park on the east side to Grand Lake on the west. It’s the highest continuous paved road in the USA, climbing to an elevation of 12,183 feet at its peak.
The road features:
Sharp curves and switchbacks that test your riding skills
Wide shoulders and pullouts for stopping and enjoying the views
Smooth pavement that makes for a comfortable ride
The elevation gain means you’ll experience a variety of ecosystems, from dense pine forests at lower levels to alpine tundra near the summit. The air gets thinner as you climb, so take it slow and stay hydrated.
Riding Through Stunning Scenery
I won't delve into the specifics of picking up the bike, except to say that it was a smooth process. The website handled all the insurance and license information, so when I arrived to pick up the bike, it only took a few moments to verify my details and I.D., rent my gear, and be on my way.
As I mentioned earlier, this bike is quite different from my usual style, but I took a brief ride through urban areas and on the motorway to get accustomed to it while heading towards the Trail's starting point at Grand Lake. I was unprepared for the sights I would encounter and how much I would enjoy the ride across the Trail Ridge Road.
Soon, I found myself navigating the roads that led to the trail, maneuvering up steep hills and sharp bends. My initial amusing encounter with this type of bike occurred when I leaned the bike too far, a move I'd confidently make on a sports bike. On a tight, twisting corner, the bike's pegs ended up scraping the ground.
After climbing for about 10 minutes, I had to pause to admire the view... it was already breathtaking!
Before reaching the Trail, I paused at Berthoud Pass. It was already an unforgettable ride, and I hadn't even arrived at the Trail Ridge Pass yet!
When I started on the trail, I paid for both the entrance and a map, which I believe cost about $30 and is valid for 7 days. Note that during peak season (May-October), a Timed-entry reservation is also required. I researched this the day before and applied for it online. A quick Google search can provide more details.
As the initial section of the trail was fairly flat, the landscape bore the scars of the devastating forest fires from 2020. It was both saddening to witness the destruction caused by the fires, yet remarkable to see nature's resilience, with signs of new growth emerging just four years later.
As the trail began to ascend, the landscape transformed rapidly, bringing to mind the winding mountain passes of Europe or the road up Mount Teide in Tenerife. However, there was one significant difference: the road here was much nicer—wider with fewer blind curves. I was amazed at how excellent the surface was, especially given the harsh winter weather conditions.
I could not stop pulling over to take pictures! the views were just breathtaking... The pictures I think speak for themselves.
As I approached the summit, the landscape transformed once more, shifting from forests and lakes to a vantage point overlooking those forests. The rugged mountain terrain offered clear views that stretched for miles. Be ready to stop every 5-10 minutes, as each turn unveils another breathtaking vista.
Tips for Motorbiking in the Rocky Mountains
If you’re planning a similar trip, here are some tips based on my experience:
Check weather forecasts before you go. Mountain weather can change rapidly.
Ride at a comfortable pace. The elevation and curves require focus and caution.
Use pullouts to rest and enjoy views. Don’t rush through the scenery.
Bring plenty of water and snacks. There are limited services along the route.
Wear layered clothing. Temperatures vary greatly from base to summit.
Be mindful of wildlife. Deer, elk, and other animals often cross the road I came across one Elk and I slowed down until it cleared out of the way.
Fuel up before entering the park. Gas stations are scarce along the route.
